Highlights in the company's history include:
David L. Edwards founded Virginia Business Computing Inc. to provide computer consulting and programming services. Virginia Business Computing developed the first prototype of Re:discovery to manage archaeological collections for the Thomas Jefferson Foundation's Monticello and Poplar Forest sites.
Following the completion of the first Collections Management prototype, the company investigated the potential for developing a total museum information system that integrated data from collections, archival records, reference, slide and photo libraries, and archaeological records. The company consulted with museum professionals and reviewed scholarly publications about museum automation to direct the development of Re:discovery.
The company converted Re:discovery to the Windows environment, and made the first installation of Re:discovery for Windows at Colonial Williamsburg in December 1993.
The Company’s name was officially changed to Re:discovery Software, Inc. (RSI).
The company released Re:discovery for Internet, a web-based interface for searching a Re:discovery database.
The National Park Service (NPS) awarded a collections management software contract to RSI to provide collections management software throughout the NPS.
A new release of Re:discovery, called Visual Re:discovery, features a new underlying database technology to support ODBC compliant databases, such as Microsoft's SQL Server database.
The Canadian Heritage Information Network (CHIN) accredits Re:discovery as a collections management system that successfully meets the needs of museums.
RSI introduces an implementation of Visual Re:discovery that is compliant with the z39.50 search protocol.
Visual Re:discovery is made compliant with Section 508 of the Federal Disabilities Act, which mandates that electronic and information technology be accessible to people with disabilities.
The company is awarded a General Services Administration contract for providing software, support and related services to federal government agencies. Re:discovery is reaccredited by CHIN.
RSI develops a prototype of the next generation of Re:discovery (Re:discovery Proficio) implemented in Microsoft's Visual Studio 2005 framework. RSI becomes a Microsoft Certified Partner.
