Ohef Sholom Temple Archives is pleased to be able to share some of its
historical collections with the general public via this web-based collections
database. Through a partnership of the Archives Committee of Ohef Sholom Temple
with Re:discovery Software of Charlottesville, VA, approximately 400 of our
historical photographs have been cataloged, digitized and made searchable all
over the world. Included in this group are local Jewish history, congregant
families, local business and enterprise and some hard-to-classify ones!
Ohef Sholom Temple Archives occupies a unique position as a religious
institution in the region. For a century and a half members have left their
mark on the development and growth of this community. To preserve important
data that tell the story, to keep faith with those who have gone before and to
inform generations to come, the Temple Board has designated a special room and
funds for a Temple Archives. It is the responsibility of Ohef Sholom Temple
Archives to make its vast resources available to the school aged children of
Tidewater. These resources include period textiles, photographs, print media
and video.
Ohef Sholom Temple Archives contains over 2,500 objects relating to the history
of Jews in Norfolk. General research services are available for a fee. School
group tours are offered free of charge and require a two week notice for
booking. This package includes a screening of the video Faces of the Past -
Voices of the Future, a tour of the building, and a complimentary copy of our
brochure which relates the story of Ohef Sholom Temple. The tour and video last
forty-five minutes.
In 1994, Ohef Sholom Temple commemorated its 150th anniversary by producing a 15
minute historical documentary and companion booklet, utilizing photographs and
oral histories to tell the story of our first 150 years.
Ohef Sholom Temple Library, containing over five thousand volumes, is the
largest Judaic book collection in Hampton Roads. Circulation privileges are
extended to non-members.
